Sky-Vue Skateland Hosts Annual Super Bowl Sunday Food Drive Supporting Local Community Ministries
Rocky Mount, NC — Sky-Vue Skateland continues its long-standing tradition of giving back by hosting an
annual food drive on Super Bowl Sunday, inviting skating families to donate non-perishable food items in
exchange for free skating admission. This yearly outreach supports multiple local ministries that serve
individuals and families facing food insecurity and homelessness throughout the region.
Donations collected during the event are distributed to five community partners:
- Kelly’s Community Pantry in Tarboro, a volunteer-led, outdoor pantry offering around-the-clock access to food and essential items
- The Salvation Army of Rocky Mount, serving Nash, Edgecombe, and Wilson counties through food assistance, emergency support, and youth programs
- United Community Ministries, providing emergency and transitional housing, including the Bassett Center / House the Children Program for families
- United Community Ministries’ Community Kitchen & Pantry, offering daily meals, food boxes, and bulk food distribution to partner agencies
- St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, which operates a food pantry several mornings each week for neighbors in need
Beyond the immediate impact, the event also serves as a teaching moment for young skaters. By participating
in the food drive, children learn firsthand that small acts of kindness—like bringing a few food items—can make a meaningful difference and become part of everyday life.
A key part of the outreach is made possible through the service of Knox Porter, a retired school teacher and longtime family friend of Sky-Vue Skateland. Each year, Porter travels from Charlotte to collect, organize, and distribute the donated goods to the participating agencies.
“This event shows the heart of our skating families,” said Denise Watkins of Sky-Vue Skateland. “Together, we’re turning a fun day at the rink into meaningful support for our neighbors.”
Sky-Vue Skateland plans to continue this tradition and invites the community to participate again on Super Bowl Sunday 2027, returning at the same time, same place, to roll together in support of local ministries and those they serve.
